Facing Fake News - Educational perspectives on digital literacy
Tomas Nygren, Uppsala University
Young people practice hyper reading extensively when they read on the web,
but they frequently do not use it in rigorous and disciplined ways” says Katherine
Hayles. But what does this mean in practice? What does it mean to read in
“rigorous and disciplined ways” and how can we support students’ habits of mind
when they read and interpret information in online environments? In this
presentation I will present some empirical studies to highlight challenges and
opportunities to support students’ success in navigating in the digital world of
humanities. I will also present the News-Evaluator a national collaboration of
researchers, designers, teachers and students to map and analyze news-feeds in
social media. This presentation is a call for disciplined empirical research beyond
the heated debate of a post-truth digital era contaminated by fake news.
